No seat at the MCG? Here are 5 of the best footy pubs

Spare seats at the MCG on AFL Grand Final Day are as rare as hen’s teeth, but the next best place to watch sporting history unfold is in a Melbourne footy pub.

Big screens, plenty of beer on tap and bargain food are the secrets to success, along with a footy-lovin’ crowd with their barracking voices turned to full throttle.

Here are 5 of the best…

1. The Rose

406 Napier St, Fitzroy, 9417 3626

This old-school pub has escaped Fitzroy’s ever-growing apartment cancer and remains the inner north’s home of AFL. If you’re lucky enough to score a pew around the old horse-shoe shaped bar, don’t move. Order a bargain countery, nurse a pot of your favourite amber fluid and you’re set. There are also limited tickets available for a footy party upstairs in the pub’s freshly-minted dining room. The $55 ticket includes canapes all day and a free drink on arrival. Bookings essential.

102 Canterbury Rd, Middle Park, 9690 1958

No fewer than NINE plasma screens give everyone a great view of the footy action, but the best spots are in the private booths with their own private TV screens (call 9690 1958 to book one). The Middle Park also boasts 45 individual beer taps and gourmet footy pies.

4. The London Tavern

238 Lennox St, Richmond, 9428 6894

It’s a great atmosphere during footy finals at the London, a drop punt from all the action at the MCG.

4. Great Northern

644 Rathdowne St, Carlton North, 9380 9569

The Northern’s groovy beer garden will be pumping on grand final day, no matter the weather, but the front bar will be the action zone during the match.

5. Corner Hotel

57 Swan St, Richmond, 9427 9198

Book a table for breakfast from 9am and hold onto it for grim life. Doors open to the rest of the world at 10.30am and it’ll be on for young and old, with big screens on almost every wall.Phillippa's Party Pies Boxed

Staying at home?

If you’re hosting a grand final party at home, here’s a tip – or a box of Phillippa’s footy goodies. Pay $20 for a box of 10 perfect party pies (right) or 20 mini sausage rolls for half-time restoration. Make sure you call ahead and pre-order and grab a bottle of Phillippa’s chutney while you’re there.
