Chin Chin’s Benjamin Cooper
shares his top five Asian grocers

Diners queue for hours for a taste of Benjamin Cooper’s Asian delicacies at Chin Chin in Flinders Lane.

The head chef at what is possibly Melbourne’s busiest restaurant does amazing things with Asian cuisine, searching Melbourne’s best Asian markets for authentic ingredients.

These are his top five Asian grocers…

1. Astee Asian Groceries & Butcher

Astee is an awesome shop in Glen Waverly’s Railway Pde. I have been using Astee as a restaurant supplier for eight years. They are fantastic people to deal with and the shop is like an Aladdin’s cave of Asian ingredients – everything you need to create that next Asian banquet.

2. Minh Phat

Abbotsford’s Minh Phat is a one stop shop for Asian goods, a veritable cornucopia of all things Asian, whether it’s food, crockery, cooking equipment or decorations. You name it they’ve more than likely got it.

3. Tan Dai Grocery

Tan Dai Grocery, or Mr T’s as everyone calls it, always has a great selection of herbs and vegetables. as well as an excellent selection of Asian sweets.

4. Golden Dragon Asian Grocery

South Melbourne Market’s Golden Dragon Asian Grocery is a great little South Melbourne local, covering most of the basics as well as some more quirky items. The lovely owners are always willing to help find that elusive ingredient.

5. Great Eastern Groceries

Great Eastern Groceries in Russell St in the city is my go-to store for last-minute requirements for Chin Chin. It’s just a quick dash from work and carries all sorts of different ingredients.
