An insider’s guide to the best bits at South Melbourne Market
Matt Naturani (above) is one of the new kids on the block at South Melbourne Market. His hole-in-the-wall coffee shop Clement usually has a queue outside for his delicious doses of caffeine and pastries.
But Matt regularly takes time out to check out the other new stalls at the market, and these are five of his favourites.
Stall 49, Coventry St, South Melbourne Market, 9696 4978
Michael Pavlov (right) has a great eye, learning his craft from a young age thanks to his step-mum Cherrie (from Fitzroy’s Flowers Vasette). He’s a great florist, understands design and has great style. Michael recently started supplying plants and arrangements to Clement and we love what he creates each week. Our store has quite an individual look to it and Michael uses his creative flair to match his arrangements to fit our needs. Check out his shop for inspiration.
2. Proper & Son
Stall 13, Food Hall, South Melbourne Market, 9699 7057
Eugene is making excellent food at Proper & Son. It’s fantastic to have a chef of Eugene’s calibre (Windsor Hotel, Lynch’s, Cafeteria) at the market. Using market produce to influence his menu each week is something that really connects with me as I’m a big believer in the community of the market. Proper & Son also has a beautiful and inviting fit out which makes the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy his Angus beef brisket burger, one of the best lunch options at the market.

Boisdale Best is a great place to stock-up on seasonal produce, all brought straight from the Gippsland farm gate by third-generation farmer Rob Harvey (right). Rob and his family are committed to reducing food miles and building a more sustainable food system. While the market provides excellent fresh produce, Boisdale Best goes a step further and that’s something I believe we should all be supporting.
Emma Cook (right) makes all the soaps she sells by hand, using Australian natural oils which Emma reckons are the best in the world. I’m keen to try her beard soap, which Emma says is walking out the door. The shop smells amazing.

Catch Seafood has only been open for a few weeks, but co-owners Michael Samiotis and Nathan Demellis
(right) are doing an amazing job with their super fresh fish, all guaranteed boneless, cut to perfect portions and cryovaced on the spot for freshness. Even better, the packs come with cooking instructions for the oven, pan, barbecue or grill.
