Melbourne lights up for the Christmas countdown

With only a few weeks until Christmas, it’s time to get your baubles on and get into the festive spirit. Melbourne is in Christmas Festival mode with some stunning festive displays. Here are five of the best…

1. Christmas tree lights

Head into the City Square to see giant Christmas tree light up every night from 7.30pm. Santa might even make a special appearance.

Melbourne City Council Christmas2. Town Hall spectacle

After having a chat to Santa, check out the festive projections on the grand old Melbourne Town Hall from dusk to 11pm every night. The projection runs every 10 minutes, telling a uniquely Melbourne Christmas tale using 3D mapping and a festive soundtrack.

3. Gingerbread Village

From this Sunday, the Christmas Gingerbread Village returns to Town Hall thanks to the clever pastry chefs at the Epicure Culinary Centre. Find the miniature MCG, Luna Park and a few surprise additions, all for a gold coin donation (with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish Australia).

4. Myer windows

The gingerbread theme continues for this year’s Myer Christmas window display. This year’s animated story pays tribute to children’s book Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett, with moving gingerbread creatures painstakingly created by a team of costume designers, automation and animation specialists, set builders, engineers, painters, make-up artists, sculptors and special effects gurus.

5. Home-grown lights

Those Christmas light fanatics along Ivanhoe’s Boulevard attract thousands of people every December with their spectacular lighting displays, but the traffic jams can be hellish. For options closer to home, check out the Christmas Lights website for magical displays across Melbourne. Top idea. If you want to brave the traffic, the Boulevard lights go on December 14.
