Top five sweet treats
at Taste of Melbourne
As food-loving Melburnians count down to Taste of Melbourne, Five of the Best has been hard at work finding the best desserts at the event.
Tents have already popped up beside Albert Park lake for tomorrow night’s launch, with lunch and dinner sessions running through the weekend.
Make sure you save room for a sweet treat. Here are five of the best…
1. Eton Mess
Sweet-fanged Melburnians are loving the dessert bar at Mr Hive Kitchen and Bar. Now the restaurant’s charming chef John Lawson is transplanting the whole sugary kit to Albert Park for Taste. Of all the fabulous sweet combinations available, the winner is John’s summer berry Eton mess (pictured above).
2. Toasted marshmallow
Remember that scene in Ghostbusters when the Staypuff Marshmallow Man attacked New York? Remember how much you wanted to eat him? Well now you can, thanks to those clever folk at Three Blue Ducks in Falls Creek. They are batting up a dessert with toasted marshmallow, chocolate and yuzu curd at the Sustainable Pop Up Restaurant on Sunday. Who you gonna calll?
3. Chocolate tart
Albert Street’s Philippa Sibley is famous for her desserts (remember the MasterChef Snickers cake?). This time, she’s making her classic lemon tart, which will please citrus fans, but for this chocoholic, I’ve only got eyes for her Valrhona Chocolate Tart. Pure French indulgence.
Justin Wise, the talented executive chef at The Point, turned to his Nanna’s cookbook for dessert inspiration for Taste of Melbourne. So when you slap your laughing gear around Justin’s baked organic quark cheesecake with hazelnut crumb and raspberry, make sure you thank Nanna Wise.
5. More chocolate
Monsieur Truffe has captured the hearts (and taste buds) of Melbourne’s northern suburbs and now the daring chocolatier is set to conquer Taste. If you’re full up to pussy’s bow from the treats mentioned above, grab a few slabs of chocolate to take home. It’s worth it.
