Attention stylish blokes (and those needing a helping hand)

Carl Nave Even the most fashion forward bloke can feel a bit intimidated by the whole bespoke outfitting scene for men in Melbourne. I know many men who see made-to-measure as a service for rich fellas and corporate bigwigs, but it’s not the case.

Melbourne tailor Carl Navè (right) beats a well-worn path around Melbourne’s top shops for male fashion. Here are his top five…

1. Milano & Co

Shop 22, 16-30 Russell Place, City

Specialising in beautifully made Italian garments, Milano & Co is one of my favourite little tucked away secrets. I love their range of Barbisio headwear and accessories, as well as their leather goods and scarves. I’m a huge fan of the light gauge knitwear that they carry by Kulto. I think need me some more in fact… it’s getting chilly.

2. Et Al

1b, 268 Flinders Lane, city, 9650 4554

Anthony Capon does an amazing job of producing high fashion garments that are really accessible. Very different to the work that I do, but I suppose that why I like the garments so much. The monochromatic collection is edgy and cool to wear, with free-flowing silhouettes and irregular cuts. I particularly love the use of cotton and linen fabrics. I love walking into their stores for a bit of inspiration – makes me want to shake things up a bit.

3. Phillips Shirts

Level 2, 274 Little Lonsdale St, city

The team at Phillips have been around forever. It’s probably the only place left in Melbourne where you feel like you’ve been transported to the 1950s as soon as you walk in the door. This is an absolute Aladdin’s Cave of vintage fabric in amazingly perfect condition. Their collection of vintage recreations last year was stunning; I can’t wait to see what else they come up with. I pop in there from time to time when sourcing cottons for my own clients, and am always amazed with what I find.

4. Wootten – Cordwainer & Leather Craftsmen

20 Grattan St, Prahran, 9532 2611

These guys are amazing. They specialise in custom-made leather goods – everything from footwear to aprons, belts and bags. Everything is made right before your eyes, and they are real artisans. I’m really into their leather bow ties at the moment, channeling Michael Jackson in his Billie Jean days, I think. Oh, and they have a huge range of colours to choose from.

5. Pugnacious George Gentleman’s Store

Level 4, 100 Flinders St, 1300 365 693

George has gifts down pat. This is my go to site for anything grooming or gift related. The range of socks is bright and colourful, and if pens or fine tooth hair combs are your thing, you need to pay the website a visit. I’m really into the Imperial grooming products at the moment, they’re great stuff.
