How Kylie Millar became
a real MasterChef winner
The sweet-toothed physio student has ditched muscle manipulation for the science of sugar, scoring a permanent gig at South Yarra’s Burch and Purchese – the closest thing to Willy Wonker’s chocolate factory this city has ever seen.
Kylie is learning from a true sweet master in Darren Purchese, the creative force behind the Chapel St sweet studio.
Surrounded by sweet goodies at work, Kylie learned quickly that she needed a great breakfast to set her up for the day. So she set about finding Melbourne’s best breakky joints, and these are her top five…
Located just around the corner from work and home in South Yarra, this is my regular haunt for an espresso and a blonde omelette with hot smoked salmon, fennel, chilli and coriander. They even have some delightful little treats you can have with your coffee if you’re on the go (or just wanting a little extra). I suggest the chocolate, walnut and sultana biscuits.
When you’re wanting to indulge in a hearty breakfast without the guilt, Monk Bodhi Dharma is where you need to go. The Balaclava cafe is completely vegetarian, has vegan options and is a boutique micro coffee roaster…bonus! Be sure to try the umami mushrooms. The Avignon apple pancakes are also winners.
This is a converted warehouse in North Melbourne, and I’m a sucker for visiting spaces that combine old school with new. My dad is a builder, enough said. But to have that combination along with an adventurous brunch menu and specialty coffee blends – this is a spot any foodie must visit.
4. De Clieu
From the team that brought you Seven Seeds, I give you De Clieu, named after a French naval officer who used his water rations to water a coffee plant instead of himself. This delightful Fitzroy cafe serves up some excellent coffee and food to match. I love the ocean trout gravlax with horseradish crème and the fruit toast with cardamom and orange butter.
I was going to be cheeky and put my kitchen in the top five, but couldn’t go past Café Rosamond. Simplicity at its best! A great little hangout located in Fitzroy, decked out with schoolroom style chairs and delicious food. Sometimes you just feel like something familiar, and when you do, this is the place you need to visit.
